Type Information: Basionym: Tichothecium pygmaeum Körb. (1853).

Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: +ascomatal wall upper part often thickened, brown to black, lower part brown or red brown;. Triebel D. (1989) Bibl. Lichol. 35: 1-278; Matzer M. (1993) Nova Hedwigia 56: 203-210; Triebel et al. (1991) Mycotaxon 42: 263-296.

Biogeography: Holarctic (worldwide in extratropical regions). Checklist records: Sonoran Desert and United States and Canada (continental) (relatively common throughout Arizona and southern California).

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenicolous; endosubstratic.

Ascocarps: Perithecioid, not emerging, soon sessile, (.15)-.175-.25-(.35) mm in diam.. Periphyses: Present (periphyses, c. (1-)2-3 µm diam., up to 40 µm long).

Ascospores: 12-16 (20-32-spored) per ascus, ellipsoid or oval, 8-10 µm long, 4-5 µm wide; septa present; transversally septate; 1-transversally septate; wall dark brown or middle brown, ornamented (slightly warted).

Conidiomata: Present; pycnidial (c. 45-90(-100) µm diam., immersed).

Conidia: (2.5)-3-5-(5.5) µm long; (.5)-1-1.5-(2) µm wide.
