Endococcus oreinae Hafellner

Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: wall of ascoma in longitudinal section brown throughout, somewhat paler towards the base, laterally c. 20 µm in diam., composed of tangentially flattened cells, in the upper part darker brown, up to 40 µm thick and cells subspherical; asci 50-65 x 10-15 µm, ascus wall thickened in about the upper third, periascal gel hemiamyloid (I+ orange, KI+ blue);. Hafellner J. et al., Mycotaxon 84: 293-329[302-303] (2002).

Biogeography: Continent: Northern America. Checklist records: Mexico (Mexico, Sonora. By the road from Hermosillo to Sahuaripa, 85 km E of Highway 15, on boulders in shrubby upland Sonoran Desert vegetation, on Dimelaena oreinae (Ach.) Norman (thallus), 21.II.1987, T.H. Nash & J. Poelt (ASU-Holotypus, GZU-Isotypus); Mexico, Sonora. Paso El Encino, ca. 23 km ENE of Moctezuma, N-facing outcrops in a small ravine, 29°52'N, 109°28'W, ca. 1160 m, on quartzitic rock, Hafellner 37634 & A. Hafellner (herb. Hafellner); Mexico, Sonora. 4-7 km E of Puente Huasabas, 29°55'30''N, 109°15-17'W, 900-1040 m, N. & J. Poelt (GZU); Mexico, Chihuahua. Sierra Madre Occidental, mountain chains W of Nuevo Casas Grandes, hills ca. 15 km SW of Janos, cliffs in desert/oak woodland transition zone, 30°41), Sonoran Desert, and United States and Canada (continental).

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenicolous; endosubstratic.

Ascocarps: Perithecioid, not emerging, .14-.2 mm in diam.. Margin: Black. Periphyses: Present (simple or branched periphysoids, 7-15 µm long, c. 1.5 µm thick). Interascal Hyphae: Absent (in mature ascomata).

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, 16-17.9-20 µm long, 5-5.9-7 µm wide; septa present (1-septate); transversally septate (both cells more or less of equal shape and size, wall somewhat constricted at the septum or not); wall thin (without visible perispore in LM), middle brown or pale brown (relatively late becoming pigmented), not ornamented (without visible perispore in LM).

Conidiomata: Absent resp. not observed (not seen).
