Thallus: Foliose, lobed; lobes linear; rounded (irregular) at the front; plane (only weakly concave or convex); separate thallus parts 1-2 mm wide. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Up to 5 cm in diameter; apex not curved. Upper Surface: Grey, brown, or brownish red; pruinose; pruina scarce or abundant; continuous or patchy (sometimes only on lobe ends); without hairs; not isidate; sorediate; soralia grey or grey-brown (darkening with age), terminal, labriform, isidiate, soredia coarse. Lower Surface: Black (sometimes in oldest parts) or brown in the centre, white (with obscure black striations (individual hyphae)) along the margin; rhizinate; rhizines moderately abundant, black, branched, squarrosely branched.
Upper Cortex: Outer cortical layer scleroplectenchymatous. Medulla: White. Lower Cortex: Absent or present; prosoplectenchymatous (missing at periphery, usually organizing inward), of periclinal (missing at periphery, usually organizing inward) hyphae.
Reproduction Strategy: Usually only known as sterile, asexually reproducing form or with sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Up to 2 mm in diam.. Margin: Lobulate (lobules may develop labriform soralia on ends), smooth.
Ascospores: 28-32 µm long, 15.5-18 µm wide.
