Type Information: Basionym: Lecanora adglutinata Flörke. Type: Hyperphyscia adglutinata (Flörke) H. Mayrhofer & Poelt,
Herzogia 5: 62 (1979).

Biogeography: Mediterranean (and temperate) and subtropical; coastal, colline, and submontane. Continent: Europe, Northern America, and Southern America. Checklist records: Mexico, Sonoran Desert, and United States and Canada (continental).

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; lignicolous; episubstratic; growing sun-exposed or partially shaded; under conditions which are dry or moist.

Thallus: Foliose (to subfoliose (lobes very thightly attached)), subdivided into main parts, lobed (to subfoliose (lobes very thightly attached)); lobes sometimes ascending; plane; separate thallus parts short, narrow; .3-.7 mm wide. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Very small; up to 2 cm in diameter. Thallus Outline: Irregular or orbicular; margin darkened (margins occasionally black) the thallus centre. Upper Surface: Grey, brown (to dark brown), or grey-brown, matt; epruinose or pruinose; pruina scarce; whitish; eciliate; without hairs; not isidate; sorediate; soralia laminal (sometimes arise from small surface lobules or thallus protrusions), capitate or maculiform, soredia coarse; not blastidiate; not schizidiate. Lower Surface: Present, black, grey, or pale brown, black in the centre, black or pale brown along the margin, firmly attached attached; attached by holdfasts (with true rhizines or sometimes without any rhizines); not rhizinate or rhizinate; rhizines sparse, not branched ((rhizines simple)).

Upper Cortex: Present; outer cortical layer paraplectenchymatous (cells with lumina of 3-7 µm in diameter); inner cortical layer prosoplectenchymatous. Medulla: White. Lower Cortex: Absent or present (often rudimentary (integrating with the substrate)).

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages (very rare). Ascocarps: Apothecioid, orbicular, forming all across the thallus surface, soon sessile, sparse, 1 mm in diam.. Margin: Lecanorine, smooth, persistent, distinct. Disk: Plane; black or brown; epruinose. Epithecium: Apical cells pale brown. Hymenium: White.

Asci: Dehiscence lecanoralean (Lecanora-type).

Ascospores: Physcia-type and Pachysporaria-type, c. 8 per ascus, spores 8 per ascus, ellipsoid, 15-23 µm long, 7-11 µm wide; septa present; transversally septate; wall apically thickened, becoming pigmented, dark brown (at maturity) or middle brown.

Conidiomata: Present; strongly abundant.

Conidia: Fusiform (not fusiform but filiform); 15-20 µm long; .5-1 µm wide.

Secondary Metabolites: Not detected (none detected).

Spot Tests: Absent reactions.
