Thallus: Foliose, subdivided into main (lobes) parts, irregular, lobed; lobes elongate, horizontal to imbricate; separate thallus parts 10-15 mm wide. Secondary Thallus: Trunk grey-yellow. Thallus Size and Differentiation: 4-12 cm in diameter; apex rounded. Thallus Outline: Orbicular. Upper Surface: Pale grey, grey-green, or grey-yellow, plane, glossy (shiny), smooth; fissurate (with age); fissures reticulate; maculate (abundant); maculae reticulate (becoming cracked with age); not pseudocyphellate (often cracked but true pseudocyphellae lacking); wrinkled (rugulose); ciliate; cilia slender; not isidate; not pustulate; sorediate; soralia subperipheral, subapical, forming from cracks or fissures, linear, soredia farinose. Lower Surface: Present, black or pale brown, black in the centre, pale brown along the margin; attached by holdfasts (true rhizines); rhizinate (centrally); rhizines sparse, black, not branched.

Upper Cortex: Present; eucortical; epicortex present; porous. Medulla: White, loose; iodine reaction in Lugol's solution negative (with Cetraria-type lichenan).

Reproduction Strategy: Only known as sterile, asexually reproducing form (not seen).

Conidiomata: Absent resp. not observed (not seen).

Secondary Metabolites: Present; only in the upper part of the cortex (atranorin, chloroatranorin) or throughout the thallus medulla (norlobaridone), atranorin or chloroatranorin.
