Type Information: Protologue: Hertel H., Beih. Nova Hedwigia 79: 422-423 (1984); type specimen label data: South Shetland Isl., KingGeorge I., Admiralty Bay area, Penguin Ridge, S of Arktowski Station, on andesite boulders on northern slope, 5 February 1980, R. Ochyra 1425/80 (M, holotype).

Biogeography: Alpine. Continent: Australasia and Antarctica.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; endosubstratic or normally episubstratic; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Not subdivided parts, areolate (primarily areolate) (bullate), dispersed along the periphery, continuous in the centre or dispersed throughout and distinctly seperate; lobes angular or rounded at the front; separate thallus parts 0-.3 mm thick. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Large; main branches basally not constricted or basally constricted. Thallus Outline: Margin concolorous the thallus centre. Upper Surface: White, lemon (citrine), brownish yellow, grey, or brown (beige), convex; not sorediate; without thalloconidia thalloconidia.

Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution negative.

Ascocarps: Soon sessile, strongly constricted at the base, 60-120 per cm², .6-.8-(1.2) mm in diam.. Margin: Not flexuose, excluded, 20-50 µm wide, epruinose. Disk: Plane, weakly convex, or strongly convex, black, epruinose, without an umbo. Exciple: Hyphae 2.5-4.5 µm wide; grey; not inspersed with crystals or inspersed with crystals. Epithecium: Apical cells olive. Hymenium: 55-(PRÜFEN)-100 µm high; white; iodine reaction: Lugol’s positive. Subhymenium: 35-50 µm high; white. Hypothecium: Brown or dark brown.

Ascospores: Ellipsoid or oblong, (8)-10.4-16.4-(21) µm long, (3.5)-5.2-6.8-(8) µm wide; wall not ornamented.

Conidia: (10)-12-16-(18) µm long.

Secondary Metabolites: Not detected or present (unknowns).
