Biogeography: Alpine. Continent: Australasia (N.Z.).
Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; episubstratic; substrate non-calciferous.
Thallus: Areolate (primarily areolate), continuous throughout, dispersed along the periphery, continuous in the centre, or dispersed throughout and distinctly seperate; lobes rounded at the front; separate thallus parts.1-.2 mm thick. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Large; main branches basally not constricted. Thallus Outline: Margin concolorous the thallus centre. Upper Surface: Brownish yellow or pale brown, convex; not sorediate; without thalloconidia thalloconidia.
Upper Cortex: Epicortex present. Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution positive.
Ascocarps: Soon sessile, slightly constricted at the base, 80-120 per cm², .3-.5-(.7) mm in diam.. Margin: Not flexuose, persistent, 45-70 µm wide, epruinose. Disk: Plane or weakly convex, black, epruinose, without an umbo. Exciple: Hyphae radiating outwards; 2.5-3 µm wide; grey; not inspersed with crystals. Epithecium: Apical cells olive to green, cell pigment reacting with 10% HCl (in H2O). Hymenium: 57-61 µm high; white to pale green; iodine reaction: Lugols positive. Subhymenium: 30-40 µm high; white. Hypothecium: Brown.
Ascospores: Broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid, (7)-8.2-8.9-(11) µm long, (4)-5.1-5.4-(6.5) µm wide; wall not ornamented.
Conidia: (7)-7.5-8.5-(9) µm long.
Secondary Metabolites: Present, norstictic acid.
