Biogeography: Montane and alpine. Continent: Europe (Au, Br, Co, Cz, Da, Fe, Ga, Ge, Gr, He, Is, It, No, Po, Rs, Sb, Su), Northern America (Greenland, Canada (N.W.T., Quebec, B.C.), Southern America (Argentina), Asia-Temperate (Kavkas, Yakutia, Nepal), Africa (Madeira), and Australasia (N.Z.: 2440 m alt.).

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; episubstratic; substrate non-calciferous, calciferous (occasionally on siliceous rocks with traces of carbonate), or metalliferous.

Thallus: Not subdivided parts, areolate (primarily areolate), continuous throughout or dispersed along the periphery, continuous in the centre; lobes angular at the front; separate thallus parts.1-1.5 mm thick. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Large; main branches basally not constricted. Thallus Outline: Margin concolorous the thallus centre. Upper Surface: White, lemon (citrine), brownish yellow (pale; on copper-rich rocks), pale grey, or brown (beige), plane or convex; not sorediate; without thalloconidia thalloconidia.

Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution positive.

Ascocarps: Forming on the pro- or hypothallus, not emerging, soon sessile to normally becoming adnate, not constricted to slightly constricted to strongly constricted at the base, 8-140 per cm², .5-1.1-(2.1) mm in diam.. Margin: Not flexuose to slightly flexuose, persistent to excluded, 15-70 µm wide, epruinose. Disk: Plane to weakly convex to strongly convex, black, epruinose, pruina scarce, without an umbo. Exciple: Hyphae radiating outwards; 2.5-3.5 µm wide; grey; not inspersed with crystals to inspersed with crystals. Epithecium: Apical cells olive to green, cell pigment reacting with 10% HCl (in H2O), cell pigment HCl+ blue. Hymenium: 41-90 µm high; white; iodine reaction: Lugol’s positive. Subhymenium: 20-80 µm high; white. Hypothecium: White to brownish yellow to brown.

Ascospores: Broadly ellipsoid to ellipsoid to oblong, (7.5)-8.7-15.2-(18) µm long, (4)-4.6-7.4-(9) µm wide; wall not ornamented.

Conidia: (7)-9.5-18.5-(25) µm long.

Secondary Metabolites: Present, norstictic acid to pannarin.
