Type Information: Protologue: Hertel H., Herzogia 1: 28 (1968); type specimen label data: Austria, Kärnten, Karnische Alpen, Raudenspitze über dem Hochweißsteinhaus bei St. Lorenzen im Lesachtal, 2200 m, 23 August 1967, H. Hertel 8028 (M, holotype).

Biogeography: Alpine. Continent: Europe (Au).

Ecology: Biotroph (matrix: Acarospora impressula); lichenicolous (matrix: Acarospora impressula); episubstratic. Host or Phorophyte Taxonomy: Acarospora.

Thallus: Areolate (primarily areolate), continuous throughout; lobes angular or rounded at the front; separate thallus parts.3-.4 mm thick. Thallus Size and Differentiation: Small; main branches basally not constricted or basally constricted. Thallus Outline: Margin concolorous the thallus centre. Upper Surface: Brown (beige), plane or convex; not sorediate; without thalloconidia thalloconidia.

Upper Cortex: Epicortex present. Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution negative.

Ascocarps: Forming on the pro- or hypothallus, not emerging (TEST!!), soon sessile or becoming adnate, not constricted or slightly constricted at the base, 60-100 per cm², .4-.5-(.8) mm in diam.. Margin: Not flexuose, persistent, 20-45 µm wide, epruinose. Disk: Plane to weakly convex, black, epruinose, without an umbo. Exciple: Hyphae radiating outwards; grey (TEST); inspersed with crystals. Epithecium: Apical cells turquoise, cell pigment HCl+ blue. Hymenium: 55-65 µm high; white or pale green; iodine reaction: Lugol’s positive. Subhymenium: 5 µm high; white. Hypothecium: White or brownish yellow.

Ascospores: Broadly ellipsoid, (6)-7.2-7.6-(9) µm long, (4.5)-5.2-5.6-(7) µm wide; wall not ornamented.

Secondary Metabolites: Present, gyrophoric acid and lecanoric acid.
