Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; episubstratic; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, rimose or areolate (primarily areolate); separate thallus parts thick (up to 0.9 mm). Thallus Outline: Soon disappearing. Upper Surface: White (chalky); special structures absent.

Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution negative.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Apothecioid, forming independently from the host thallus or mycelium, soon sessile, strongly constricted at the base, .4-1.8 mm in diam.. Margin: Excluded, prominent. Disk: Plane to weakly convex, black, pruinose (indistinctly greyish green). Exciple: Grey, light brown (from inclusion of fine crystalline substances), or white. Epithecium: Apical cells distinctly swollen, black or dark turquoise. Hymenium: 45 µm high; white. Interascal Hyphae: Scarcely branched, not or scarcely anastomosed. Hypothecium: 30-100 µm high; yellow (ochre) or white.

Asci: 32-40 µm long, 9-12 µm wide; dehiscence lecanoralean (clavate).

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, spores 8 per ascus, 8-12 µm long, 3.5-4.5 µm wide; septa present (mostly slightly constricted at septum).

Conidiomata: Present (70-100 µm diam.); adnate.

Pycnidia: Globular; wall black. Conidia: Cylindrical ("ellipsoid"); 3-4 µm long, 1.75 µm wide.

Secondary Metabolites: Present, atranorin.

Spot Tests: Upper surface: K + deep yellow, C –, KC + orange, PD light + yellow.
