Thallus: Areolate (primarily areolate). Thallus Outline: Persistent. Upper Surface: Grey or white, rough; not sorediate.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Soon sessile, strongly constricted at the base, 1-6 mm in diam.. Margin: Lecanorine, strongly flexuose, persistent, prominent, concolourous with the surrounding thallus. Disk: Black (like tar). Epithecium: Apical cells purplish brown. Hymenium: Purplish brown (less intense towards the lower parts) or pink (rosé). Hypothecium: White.

Ascospores: 9-13 µm long, 5.5-7 µm wide; septa absent.

Conidia: Cylindrical; 10-14 µm long.

Secondary Metabolites: a-collatolic acid, alectoronic acid, or atranorin.
