Biogeography: Continent: Europe, Northern America, and Southern America.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, areolate (primarily areolate) or granular; separate thallus parts thin (0.1-0.3 mm). Thallus Outline: Persistent (rarely); black or grey. Upper Surface: Verrucose (to wavy), light grey (creamy) or lemon (citrine), matt.

Medulla: Iodine reaction in Lugol's solution negative.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Soon sessile, slightly constricted or strongly constricted at the base, .2-.4-.8 mm in diam.. Margin: Lecideine/biatorine, excluded, indistinct. Disk: Plane or weakly convex, black or brown (when damaged ?), epruinose or pruinose (pale greyish, when damaged ?), pruina scarce. Exciple: Carbonized; brown or grey-green. Parathecium (proper excipulum): Pale brown (sometimes) or white. Amphithecium (thalline excipulum): Present. Epithecium: Apical cells slightly swollen, brown, grey-green, or olive (olivaceous). Hymenium: White. Hypothecium: Pale brown (rarely) or white.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, ellipsoid, 9-13 µm long, 5-6.5 µm wide; septa absent; wall thick (not halonate), distinctly differentiated into primary and secondary wall (not halonate), not ornamented (not halonate).

Secondary Metabolites: 4,5-dichloronorlichexanthone, arthothelin (2,4,5-trichloronorlichexanthone), isoarthothelin (= 2,5,7-trichloronorlichexanthone), thiophanic acid (= 2,4,5,7-tetrachloronorlichexanthone), or thuringione (= 2,4,5-trichloro-3-O-methylnorlichexanthone) (in traces), of the following substance class(es): xanthones.
