Biogeography: Continent: Europe and Northern America.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; lignicolous (rarely); episubstratic (sorediate); substrate usually non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, areolate (primarily areolate) (usually); separate thallus parts thick (usually thicker than 0.5 mm).

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Apothecioid, forming independently from the host thallus or mycelium, .9-1.2-1.6 mm in diam.. Margin: Up to 50 µm wide. Epithecium: Apical cells dark green or olive (or olive-brown). Hymenium: 60-80 µm high.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, broadly ellipsoid or ellipsoid, 10-17 µm long, 6-10-(11) µm wide; septa absent; wall thick (not halonate), distinctly differentiated into primary and secondary wall (not halonate), not ornamented (not halonate).

Secondary Metabolites: Present, 2,5,7-trichloro-3-O-methylnorlichexanthone, atranorin, isoarthothelin (= 2,5,7-trichloronorlichexanthone), or thiophanic acid (= 2,4,5,7-tetrachloronorlichexanthone).
