Biogeography: Continent: Africa, Asia-Temperate, Australasia, Europe, Northern America, and Southern America.

Ecology: Substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Not subdivided parts, rimose; separate thallus parts thin or thick. Thallus Outline: Lobed or arachnoid; indistinct; soon disappearing; white or black. Upper Surface: Lemon (citrine), orange, pale grey, or pale brown, matt or glossy (shiny), smooth; epruinose; not sorediate.

Ascocarps: Soon sessile, not constricted at the base. Margin: Lecanorine, smooth, not flexuose, persistent, indistinct to prominent, concolourous with the surrounding thallus; with a thin, inner rim visible between disk and thalline margin. Disk: Plane, dark brown or grey-brown, pruina abundant. Parathecium (proper excipulum): White, not inspersed with crystals. Amphithecium (thalline excipulum): Present; crystals dissolving in 10% KOH; photobiont abundant. Amphithecial Cortex: Present, indistinct, pseudocortical or eucortical, 20-25-30-(35) µm wide, not basally widened, 20-30-35 µm wide at the base. Episamma: Soluble in KOH. Epithecium: Apical cells slightly swollen, hyaline or dark brown, soluble in 10% KOH. Hymenium: Not inspers. Hypothecium: White; not inspers.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, ellipsoid, 9.5-12-14 µm long, 5.5-6.5-7.5-(8) µm wide; wall thin, not ornamented.

Secondary Metabolites: Atranorin, roccellic acid, sordidone, arthothelin (2,4,5-trichloronorlichexanthone), and thiophanic acid (= 2,4,5,7-tetrachloronorlichexanthone), of the following substance class(es): orcinol depsides, (higher) aliphatic acids, chromones, and xanthones.
