Type Information: Type: Sculptolumina japonica (Tuck.) Marbach.

Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: The genus can clearly be identified by its one-septed brown ascospores with wide walls (and small characteristic lumina)and a densly inspersed hymenium. Marbach, B. 2000. Corticole und lignicole Arten der Flechtengattung Buellia sensu lato in den Subtropen und Tropen. - Bibl. Lichenol. 74: 1-384.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; terricolous (often on half detrified substratum), bryophytic, lignicolous, or corticolous.

Lichen Photobionts: Primary photobiont present; chlorococcal.

Thallus: Indistinct (the thallus can be very variable inside a species) or crustose, not subdivided parts, squamulose or granular. Thallus Outline: Soon disappearing. Upper Surface: Grey, brown, or white; special structures absent. Lower Surface: Attached by the whole lower surface; special structures absent.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Apothecioid, orbicular, becoming adnate to soon sessile. Wall: Carbonized only in parts. Margin: Indistinct to distinct; external filaments absent. Exciple: Black or brown. Periphyses: Absent. Epithecium: Apical cells brown. Hymenium: Oil inspersed. Interascal Hyphae: Present, scarcely branched, not or scarcely anastomosed. Hypothecium: Black or brown.

Asci: Tholus thickened, amyloid, with non-amyloid wide axial body and divergent amyloid flanks towards apex; ocular chamber broad; dehiscence lecanoralean.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, broadly ellipsoid or ellipsoid, (16)-19-21-23-(27) µm long, (7)-9-11-12-(14) µm wide, obtuse; septa present; transversally septate, 1-transversally septate, formed by the endospore wall layer; wall thick or thin (cells with small lumina), distinctly differentiated into primary and secondary wall, not thickened at the septum or thickened at the septum, not constricted where the septum meets the spore wall, middle brown, in Lugol's Solution negative, wall ornamented or not ornamented (cells with small lumina).

Conidiomata: Absent resp. not observed.

Secondary Metabolites: Not detected or present, of the following substance class(es): ß-orcinol depsidones.
