Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: The species of Gassicurtia are quite close related and sometimes not easy to identify. The genus can be seperated clearly from other genera formerly belonging to Buellia. Marbach, B. 2000. Corticole und lignicole Arten der Flechtengattung Buellia in den Subtropen und Tropen. - Bibl. Lichenol. 74: 1-384.

Ecology: Biotroph; lichenized; lignicolous or corticolous; substrate non-calciferous.

Lichen Photobionts: Primary photobiont present; chlorococcal. Secondary photobiont absent.

Thallus: Crustose, not subdivided parts, squamulose, granular, or rimose. Thallus Outline: Soon disappearing. Upper Surface: Grey, yellow, or white; special structures absent (in some species red Pigments are breaking out from the medulla to the surface); not pseudocyphellate; eciliate; without hairs; not isidate; not sorediate; not cephalodiate; not lobulate; with granules granules, with thalloconidia thalloconidia. Lower Surface: Attached by the whole lower surface; special structures absent; not pseudocyphellate; not cyphellate; not rhizinate; without thalloconidia thalloconidia; not cavernulate; not tomentose.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Apothecioid, orbicular, becoming adnate to soon sessile. Wall: Carbonized only in parts, not fused. Margin: Distinct; external filaments absent. Exciple: Black or brown. Periphyses: Absent. Epithecium: Apical cells black, grey, brown, red, or brownish yellow. Interascal Hyphae: Present, scarcely branched, not or scarcely anastomosed. Hypothecium: Black or brown.

Asci: Tholus thickened, amyloid, with non-amyloid wide axial body and divergent amyloid flanks towards apex or with non-amyloid narrow axial body and amyloid convergent flanks towards apex; ocular chamber broad; dehiscence lecanoralean.

Ascospores: c. 8 to 12-16 per ascus, ellipsoid, (7)-9-12-14-(17) µm long, (3)-4-4.5-5.5-(6) µm wide, obtuse; septa present; transversally septate, 1-transversally septate, formed by the proper spore wall; wall thin, not thickened at the septum, not constricted where the septum meets the spore wall, dark brown or middle brown, in Lugol's Solution negative, wall not ornamented or ornamented.

Conidiomata: Present or absent resp. not observed; pycnidial; immersed to adnate.

Conidiogeneous Cells: Apical. Conidia: Fusiform; microconidial, not branched; aseptate.

Secondary Metabolites: Present, of the following substance class(es): orcinol depsides, orcinol depsidones, ß-orcinol depsides, (anthra-)quinones, and xanthones.
