Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: +ascoc. outer wall cells rather thick-walled, irregularly shaped, 8-30 µm diam.;This variety differs from var. fuliginea by ascomata characters, see below. Braun U., Beih. Nova Hedwigia 89: 1-700 [134-135] (1987).

Biogeography: Continent: Asia-Temperate. Region(s): Far Eastern Asia. Country or state(s): Japan.

Ecology: Biotroph; phytopathogenic; growing on stems or leaves, amphigenous. Host or Phorophyte Taxonomy: Veronicastrum sibiricum var. japonicum Hara; Veronicastrum, Scrophulariaceae.

Reproduction Strategy: With sexual (and possible asexual) stages. Ascocarps: Cleistothecioid, orbicular, forming independently from the host thallus or mycelium, not emerging (often, in the mycelial layer), scattered or in loose groups, .08-.11 mm in diam.. Margin: External filaments present; interwoven with surrounding mycelium, mycelioid, straight, .5-2 µm long, 4-8 µm in diameter, hyaline or pigmented (yellowish, later brown), few, growing all across the lower half of the ascocarp, smooth or rough, thin, not ramified, septate.

Asci: 1 asci per ascocarp, not stipitate, 60-70 µm long, 55-65 µm wide; dehiscence unitunicate.

Ascospores: c. 8 per ascus, spores 6-8 per ascus, 19-25 µm long, 13-17 µm wide; septa absent.
