Nomenclature: Current taxonomic status: accepted. Taxonomic rank: species. Cladonia. Cladoniaceae Zenker (1827).

Taxonomic Literature: Taxonomic notes: similar to schofieldii but has smaller, ecorticate squamules and contains atranorin alone. Brodo I.M. & Ahti T., Can. J. Bot. 74: 1147-1180 (1996).

Ecology: Terricolous; growing sun-exposed; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, squamulose; lobes ascending; branches densely aggregated or scattered (rare); separate thallus parts 2-8 mm long; 1.5-6 mm wide. Primary Thallus: Persistent. Secondary Thallus: Absent or present, arising from edge of the primary thallus, of determinate growth; stipe 15 mm high, .5-1 mm wide, lime green (where corticate), homogeneously coloured, not corticate (except for scattered corticate verrucae), with longitudinally split or canaliculate wall. Thallus Outline: Margin dissected (curled up showing undersurface). Upper Surface: Verruculose or areolated (with scattered convex areolae, almost granule-size), lime green (pale to greyish yellow green (119-121, 122)); not sorediate. Lower Surface: White or brown (at base).

Lower Cortex: Absent.

Ascocarps: Forming apical at the tip of branches or stipes, sparse (uncommon), 2.5 mm in diam.. Disk: Weakly convex to strongly convex; brown.

Conidiomata: Formed on primary squamules.

Secondary Metabolites: Atranorin, of the following substance class(es): (higher) aliphatic acids (unidentified).

Spot Tests: Upper surface: K + bright yellow (citrine, lemon), C –, PD – or + yellow.
