Nomenclature: Current taxonomic status: accepted. Taxonomic rank: species. Cladonia. Cladoniaceae Zenker (1827).

Ecology: Terricolous or lignicolous (especially logs and fence rails); growing sun-exposed; substrate non-calciferous.

Thallus: Crustose, squamulose; lobes ascending or horizontal; rounded (thick, convex) at the front; branches densely aggregated, scattered, loosely aggregated, or clustered; separate thallus parts 1-1.5 mm long; .8-1 mm wide. Primary Thallus: Persistent. Secondary Thallus: Present, arising from center of the primary thallus, of determinate growth; stipe 10-20 mm high, 1-1.5 mm wide, grey-green or grey, homogeneously coloured, corticate or not corticate (cortex at base of some podetia, but on most, being replaced by soredia), with intact wall. Thallus Outline: Margin entire or crenulate. Upper Surface: Verruculose (on corticate parts of base), grey-green or grey (greenish grey to grey), smooth; not sorediate or sorediate (occasionally); soralia peripheral, soredia coarse. Lower Surface: White.

Lower Cortex: Absent.

Ascocarps: Forming apical at the tip of branches or stipes (singly, or in a ring at the tip of the blunt podetium), sparse, .3-.5 mm in diam.. Disk: Strongly convex; red.

Conidiomata: Formed on podetia.

Secondary Metabolites: Thamnolic acid (and decarboxythamnolic acid) and barbatic acid, of the following substance class(es): ß-orcinol depsides.

Spot Tests: Upper surface: K + deep yellow, C –, PD + yellow or + orange.
