Nomenclature: Current taxonomic status: accepted. Taxonomic rank: species. Cladonia. Synonyms: Cladonia groenlandica (Dahl) Trass; Cladoniaceae Zenker (1827).

Ecology: Terricolous or lignicolous (mostly on rotting logs); growing sun-exposed, partially shaded, or fully shaded.

Thallus: Crustose, squamulose; lobes ascending or horizontal; branches loosely aggregated, scattered, or clustered; separate thallus parts 1-6 mm long; 2-8 mm wide. Primary Thallus: Persistent. Secondary Thallus: Present, arising from center of the primary thallus, of determinate growth; stipe 12-40 mm high, 1-2.5 mm wide, lime green, olive, or brown (same as squamules where corticate), homogeneously coloured or tainted brown, corticate, with intact wall, 25-40 µm thick. Thallus Outline: Margin crenulate or dissected. Upper Surface: Lime green or brown (dark greenish yellow to greyish greenish yellow (103-105)very pale brownish), smooth (showing some longitudinal ridges in a few specimens); not sorediate. Lower Surface: White.

Lower Cortex: Absent.

Ascocarps: Forming along the margin of scyphi, sparse, 1-2 mm in diam.. Disk: Weakly convex to strongly convex; brown (brownish orange to dark brown (54-56)).

Secondary Metabolites: Fumarprotocetraric acid and protocetraric acid, of the following substance class(es): ß-orcinol depsidones.

Spot Tests: Upper surface: K – (negative) (or brownish), C –, PD + red.
